I am an artist and scientist based in Southern California. Working with unruly materials – materials that act as if they have minds of their own – my artwork probes our limits in understanding the world.  

In one series, ongoing since 2017, I coax carbon powders moving in fluid to create paintings hovering in a state of multistable legibility. More recently, I developed a new method (patented 2026) that gives more agency to powders moving in fluid, enriching the organic complexity of forms. I’ve shared this method with focused groups throughout the United States as a doorway to the hidden structure of the physical world. In other recent work, I built colonies of randomly connected hinged boxes that viewers handle and interact with; through their interactions, viewers discover and explore a complex system.

My work is driven by considerations of perception, the idea of apparent randomness, and how our biology determines what we can know.
